In Motorway or motornay? I coloured UK roads by the first number in their name. To make the nomenclature clearer I have grouped these roads into regions, then coloured the map below.

Regions defined by the first number of UK roads. Produced by removing all motorways, trunk roads (ending in (T)) and roads over 75km in length (150km in Scotland)

How does this compare with the principal A roads, I hear nobody ask…On the image below the principle A roads are on the left of each region, if looking from London (or Edinburgh for regions 7, 8 & 9). Do the rest of the numbers make any sense? Is this some kind of primitive geometric hashing? Stay tuned for next time…
